TITLE: SuperValu WCSL Announce WEST CORK OIL Sponsorship of Emerging Talent Programme for 2008/09
AUTHOR: Ger McCarthy
MEDIA: Evening Echo - Oct 2008

The West Cork Schoolboys League has announced that West Cork Oil will sponsor this season’s 2008-09 FAI Emerging Talent soccer programme for the West Cork area.

Beginning in October, the SuperValu WCSL - in conjunction with the FAI - will hold weekly specialised training sessions every Wednesday night under floodlights in the Clonakilty Sports Complex. Each participating West Cork Club will be invited to send a selection of their most talented players ranging in age-groups from U11, U12, U13 and U14 for weekly specialised training sessions with qualified FAI Coaches. Last season's successful U13 Kennedy Cup squad will form this year's U14 Emerging Talent squad but a final squad for the U11, 12 and 13 age groups will be whittled down following a series of training sessions and trials over the coming months.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of West Cork Oil the Schoolboys League will enter teams in the National Inter-League tournaments for the first time ever. This season both the WCSL Emerging Talent U12 and U14 squads will participate in National Inter-League Competitions against other Schoolboys Leagues (initially) from the Munster area. 10 leagues have entered the SFAI Inter-League U12 competition for 2008/09. The Cork, Kerry, Waterford, West Waterford, Limerick County, Limerick Desmond, Limerick District, South Tipperary and North Tipperary Schoolboys Leagues will join West Cork in the U12 equivalent of this year’s Inter-league competition. At U14 level West Cork will face a selection from the following entry list: Cork, Waterford, Limerick County, Limerick District, Clare, Kerry and South Tipperary. Should either the West Cork U12’s or U14’s emerge from their respective Munster sections then they will progress to the National Stage of the competition(s) where they could face the likes of the Galway, Athlone or Dublin District Schoolboys Leagues. Regional opening rounds of the competitions will be run off at various weekends between October 2008 and May 2009. Regional Group winners will play off in April 2009.

What is the FAI Emerging Talent Programme?
The simple aim of the Emerging Talent Programme is to raise the technical ability of young players across all levels of the game through a provision of further training and lifestyle development at schoolboy league and then onto regional level. According to the FAI:” It is the belief of the FAI that its Emerging Talent Programme will have a positive and long lasting effect on the development of football in Ireland. The future will see local standards continually rise and will eventually result in a higher standard of player playing in Irish national squads, national league clubs and representative teams playing at Grassroots level.”

ETP AIMS
The Programme aims to provide emerging talent in the West Cork area with a clear pathway to success by giving them the opportunity to train and play with the more talented players and coaches in their area, thus providing them with a more challenging level of training and development. The Emerging Talent is split into two parts. The regional centres are for players aged 14-16 and are totally controlled by the FAI. Feeding the regional centres are the schoolboy league centres that will be for players predominantly aged 11 to 16. These league centres will follow a technical plan; guidelines and procedures set out by the FAI and are then run by the individual leagues.

The FAI has developed the Emerging Talent Programme with the following aims:

• To identify, develop, monitor and evaluate players in all age groups
• To enable emerging talent to develop all of their capacities to their potential
• To provide emerging talent with a more challenging level of training and development
• To provide emerging talent with the opportunity to train within their own area in a more structured and quality environment
• To provide a higher quantity and quality of players for National and International teams
• To improve the quality of players across all levels of the games

The 2008-09 West Cork Oil sponsored Emerging Talent Programme - in conjunction with the West Cork Schoolboys League and the FAI - was officially launched in the West Cork Hotel in Skibbereen last week.

The official announcement of a sponsorship agreement between the West Cork Schoolboys League and West Cork Oil represents a significant announcement in the further development of youth soccer in the West Cork area. Thanks to West Cork Oil’s kind sponsorship, the WCSL have been able to proceed with the programme on a much larger scale than previous seasons. Over 100 children from all over West Cork are now regularly attending specialised training sessions every Wednesday night under floodlights in the Astro Turf Sports Complex in Clonakilty.

The injection of funds from West Cork Oil has allowed the Emerging Talent Co-Coordinators to plan ahead, source the necessary training kit and equipment and most importantly of all enter the Schoolboys Football Association of Ireland’s (SFAI) National Inter-League under-12 and under-14 Competitions for the very first time. Michael & Kathleen Kirby of West Cork Oil have been delivering home heating oil to houses, farmhouses & businesses in the West Cork area for nearly 20 years. West Cork Oil tankers use the latest distribution technology available in the industry and all deliveries are metered. The West Cork Oil Company Ltd has been supplying Texaco branded fuels and lubricants to the Farming community for over twenty years.

The official launch began in the splendid surroundings of the West Cork Hotel with WCSL Chairman Pat Lacey opening proceedings. The Chairman began by thanking Michael and Kathleen Kirby of West Cork Oil for their generous sponsorship of the ETP. "It is fantastic to see over 100 children participating in the programme every Wednesday night and thanks to the West Cork Oil sponsorship we can facilitate these numbers with the proper training kit and equipment". Mr. Lacey also paid tribute to the participating coaches, FAI representatives and programme co-ordinator: Martin Henwood for their Trojan efforts so far this season. He concluded by saying “West Cork Oil’s sponsorship is vital to the ETP as we can now enter teams – for the first time ever- into National competitions so on behalf of the WCSL we thank West Cork Oil sincerely for their tremendous support”.

WCSL Fixtures Secretary Don Hurley spoke next giving a brief overview of the Schoolboys League setup in West Cork mentioning there are now 17 clubs fielding over 40 teams this season. Mr. Hurley also added that the recent addition of an U16 Schoolgirls league demonstrated the remarkable growth of the WCSL in recent years. Mr. Hurley also mentioned the fact that the sponsorship from SuperValu in recent years and now West Cork Oil had helped promote the WCSL and thus increase the number of participating teams over the past 3 seasons.

Emerging Talent Programme Co-ordinator and WCSL Registrar Martin Henwood outlined how the West Cork Oil sponsorship money was being put to effective use. Each participating player has received a brand new (subsidised) training kit and rain jacket and first class training equipment has also been purchased. Mr. Henwood went on to mention that the most significant use of the new sponsorship money had allowed the WCSL to compete in the upcoming National Inter-League under-12 and under-14 tournaments. Mr. Henwood stated, “The 10 remaining ETP sessions this year will see over 100 children being coached by FAI qualified coaches and continually assessed for their own development in a positive sporting environment. We are indebted to West Cork Oil for their kind sponsorship and once again thank them for coming on board”.

FAI Regional Development Officer Ray Claffey also spoke at the launch and paid tribute to the WCSL Committee for their efforts in helping the ETP get off the ground and turning the programme into such a success. “The young players are the most important element of this programme and each player will improve as a footballer thanks to an increase in the number of qualified FAI coaches taking part in the West Cork ETP”. Mr Claffey concluded by saying, “It is a tremendous achievement to have West Cork Oil, the FAI and the WCSL coming together as a team for the benefit of improving young players in the West Cork area. The FAI is delighted to be part of this process and long may it continue”.

Kathleen Kirby of new sponsors, West Cork Oil, concluded the launch by expressing her delight at being associated with the WCSL Emerging Talent Programme. Mrs. Kirby stated; “I commend the WCSL Committee for the tremendous work they have put in to getting this new programme off the ground. West Cork Oil is absolutely delighted to be associated with such an important programme and we wish the WCSL, FAI, ETP Coaches and participants all the best for the coming season”. Mrs. Kirby went on to say, "The ETP represents a fantastic opportunity for qualified coaches in the West Cork area to learn from FAI coaches and benefit the young players taking part in the programme". Mrs. Kirby concluded proceedings by saying, “The qualified coaches are the key to the success of the programme and it is absolutely brilliant to see so many qualified West Cork coaches involved. West Cork Oil wishes the ETP every success in the coming season and the best of luck to the under-12 and under-14 teams taking part in the upcoming SFAI National Cup competitions".
