Conor
O’Driscoll, Steven McCarthy and Gavin O’Leary
have been selected to represent the West Cork
Schoolboys League at upcoming FAI Regional and
International trials following their stellar performances
at the 2009 UMBRO Kennedy Cup. O’Driscoll
rounded off a terrific week for the WCSL by being
voted one of the top 15 players at the tournament.
The three West Cork based players elevation to
the international trials reflects how well they
have developed under the tutelage of the WCSL
and FAI’s Emerging Talent Programme over
the last number of years. West Cork ETP Co-ordinator
Martin Henwood explains: “The ETP provides
regular structured coaching coupled with the experience
of interleague competition which has helped the
lads realise their true potential”. WCSL
Kennedy Cup Coach Conor Uhl concurs: “All
we as a league and Emerging Talent Programme can
do, is offer the lads the best advice and continue
to work and coach them to our best ability in
order for them to reach their full potential.
That’s what we have always done and what
we will continue to do”. Nurturing the emergence
of such raw talent from the West Cork area is
down to the sponsorship of West Cork Oil and the
hard work of the ETP. “The talent has always
been present in the region as one can see from
the numerous West Cork players representing clubs
such as Cork City” says Conor Uhl. “I
think what the Emerging Talent Programme best
allows for is this: players can now be coached
at a high level from a much earlier age i.e. U11
and therefore achieve a totally different level
of development when they reach the Kennedy Cup
age group (U13)”.
AGRESSION
The WCSL rebounded from a disappointing start
to this year’s Kennedy Cup to finish 29th
overall following back to back victories over
the Carlow and Kilkenny Schoolboys Leagues. There
were many impressive individual performances throughout
the competition but strikers Steven McCarthy and
Conor O’Driscoll proved to be a lethal combination.
Martin Henwood outlines why each of the forward’s
is such a special talent: “Pace, power,
aggression, skill, good finishing, a tremendous
attitude coupled with a fantastic work rate makes
Conor O’Driscoll the most exciting forward
I have worked with in my time in schoolboys soccer.
Steven McCarthy is also a really exciting young
player and was doubtful through injury right up
to the tournament. He got fitter and stronger
as the week went on but worked extra hard, scored
his goals and his selection for the international
trials is just reward”. While O’Driscoll
and McCarthy were busy tearing up defences at
one end of the pitch Riverside Athletics’
goalkeeper Gavin O’Leary produced a string
of terrific performances at the other end. Conor
Uhl highlights the reason behind O’Leary’s
ascension to the international ranks: “The
goalkeeper of the tournament in my eyes. Gavin
is a fantastic shot stopper. He’d throw
himself in front of a train if it meant preventing
a goal. He is a confident young man who had an
excellent tournament”.
HIBERNIA TROPHY
Arising out of this year’s UMBRO Kennedy
Cup, the FAI selected their top 15 players to
represent the Football Association of Ireland
at the upcoming Hibernia Cup in Dublin. West Cork’s
Conor O’Driscoll has been picked on the
FAI squad and will report for a series of training
sessions throughout July before travelling to
take part in the tournament being held in St Josephs
Boys FC (2008/09 FAI Club of the year) grounds
in Sallynoggin, Dublin. 2009 marks the fifth year
of the International tournament being held in
the club famously known as ‘Joey’s’.
Last year’s competition attracted clubs
from as far away as Japan, Holland and England.
This summer’s competition currently includes
the following list of entrants: FC Utrecht (Netherlands),
Lyngby BK (Denmark), FAI squad (Rep of Ire), DDSL
squad (Rep of Ire), St. Joseph's Boys (Rep of
Ire), Nottingham Forest (England) and Huddersfield
Town (England). The FAI squad s involvement, based
on the top 15 players from this season’s
Kennedy Cup is being hailed as a real coup by
the competitions organisers. The official St.
Joseph’s club web site reports: “It
is always a great honour to have your own country’s
Football Association send one of its teams as
Hibernia Trophy participants. They are back again
this year with John Morling the former Peterborough
United coach replacing Vincent Butler as manager
of the FAI development squad”. Martin Henwood
explains the reason why Conor O’Driscoll
deserves his chance in the FAI International squad:
“Hard work, pace, ability and a fantastic
attitude have rewarded Conor with a place in the
15 man squad to represent the Kennedy Cup players
at the Hibernia Cup. On many occasions I have
seen players with similar ability but lacking
the necessary work rate. With Conor both these
attributes are present and that just makes him
something special”.
It
is hoped the progression of Conor O’Driscoll,
Steven McCarthy and Gavin O’Leary to the
FAI international ranks marks the beginning of
a golden period for the WCSL thanks to the on-going
success of the West Cork Oil sponsored ETP in
the region.
